For rooftop functions the best twenty minutes of the whole evening are the ones right after sunset, when the sky still has colour and the string lights have come on. Miss it and you are shooting against a black sky for the rest of the night. We plan the couple portraits into that window and tell the family in advance so nobody is being hunted for at the critical moment.

Rooftop, forty guests, February. Sunset at 6:12 pm, so we had the couple upstairs at 6:00 and finished the portraits by 6:25 with the sky still blue behind them. The rest of the night was indoors with three small lights around the room. The couple used a blue-hour frame as their reception invite.
