Sukhna is the most requested location in this city and the one most often shot badly, for a single reason: people arrive at nine.
Either side of sunrise you get still water, an empty promenade, and colour in the sky. From about seven the lake becomes a walking track and stays busy until dark.
That is the whole shoot. Everything else is a compromise, and the difference between a 6:15 start and an 8:30 start is not subtle — it is the difference between an empty lake and a queue of morning walkers in the background of every frame.
The Shivalik hills sit behind the water on the far side. At sunrise the light comes across the lake towards you, so you get warm light landing on faces with hills and open water behind.
Most locations force you to choose between good light on the subject and a good background. Sukhna at sunrise gives you both, which is why it is worth getting up for.

January, heavy fog, 6:20 am start. The couple had asked twice whether we should postpone. We did not. The hills were invisible, the water was flat and grey, and the whole set came back looking like a painting — the strongest gallery we shot at that lake all year. They had wanted a bright blue sky and got something far better.
